International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women's Day, is celebrated on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women for their economic, political and social achievements.
March 8, 1917 in the capital of Russia, Petrograd, began a demonstration of women textile workers, covering the whole city. This was the beginning of the Russian Revolution. Declared a national holiday in the Soviet Russia in 1917, it was predominantly celebrated in socialist and communist countries until it was adopted in 1977 by the United Nations.

Department of Posts has honoured contemporary women personalities of India by issuing commemorative stamps in their honour.
Here she present a list of women personalities who have established themselves as role models for Indian womanhood and have been commemorated on postage stamps of India. This list also includes Stamps issued on theme related to girl child or woman and foreign Women personalities who contributed to various fields in India and have been commemorated on Indian Postage Stamps.
